Should I switch practice areas?

YES
It is difficult to switch practice areas, but
it can be done. Your ability to switch practices will depend on
your academic background,
your law firm experience, the law firm you’re with, the
condition of the legal market, the demand of the practice area
you want to enter and exit, your geographic location and, perhaps,
pure luck. However, the most important aspect turns on the question
of who you really are. Before you go much further, you must analyze
critically whether you have the personality traits and qualities
to practice in the area you desire. For example, if you’re
a litigator who doesn’t like the constant conflict and
adversarial environment, ask yourself whether you would be happy
in the more unemotional, controllable environment of an in-house
practice.

NO
Don’t switch your practice if you’re merely unhappy
with your current firm. The best solution might be to change firms
or even taking a vacation. Take the time to be honest with yourself
and identify the real reason you’re seeking change in your
practice area, and make sure your reason has been thoroughly explored
and is compelling. You do not want to find yourself in a similar
predicament in a year or two. |
