Should I consider clerking?

YES
Many former clerks describe a clerkship as a unique opportunity
to learn about judicial decision-making, and how to enhance your
career opportunities and expand your geographic mobility. Clerking
also provides the opportunity to absorb a great deal of law in
a short time, and to see how the law is applied in a generic
way.

NO
Clerking is not for everyone. If you’re
an experience attorney, it means interrupting a career path, and
often taking a pay cut.
It might also mean that, while waiting for a clerkship to begin,
choice assignments would be given to others. And in many cases,
clerking could derail a partnership in the short term. At the very
least, the decision to clerk could be perceived as a lack of commitment
to your firm. |
